And the interesting question here is whether there is a market for these chips. According to the DDI executive, cdma2000 is seriously late. If all of Asia and Europe goes W-CDMA - do they really need chipsets that are compatible with Qualcomm's own standards? Are manufacturers willing to pay a premium for these chipsets over plain vanilla W-CDMA chipsets?

That's the problem with niche standards. If one standard gets over 80% of the world market, most manufacturers will just concentrate on it, ignoring the minor alternative. Qualcomm needs to catch up with the global W-CDMA development effort *and* do cdma2000 simultaneously.

Now we get to see just how smart their engineers are.
