Seeking U.S. acquisition

Wellendorf -- along with most observers -- said a big question mark still hangs over the German firm's international strategy. This was an area Deutsche Telekom's chairman Ron Sommer tried to address at a news conference.

He reiterated that his company's keen on penetrating the U.S. market following the end of its alliance with Sprint Corp. (FON: news, msgs) which -- regulatory approval pending -- is being bought by MCI WorldCom Inc. (WCOM: news, msgs). "It is clear that we are thinking in terms of an acquisition and not simply a loose alliance (in the U.S.)," Sommer (CEO)said.

Earlier in the year Deutsche Telekom was reportedly close to buying Qwest Communications International Inc. (Q: news, msgs) and has also been linked to Global Crossing Ltd. (GBLX: news, msgs) and Cable & Wireless PLC (CWP: news, msgs) of the U.K. However, Sommer's declined to comment on this, merely saying that when it has something concrete, Deutsche Telekom will make an announcement.
