Another Old Release by NEC (which has a few W-CDMA patents) Regarding Trials 4/28/99 -- NEC Corporation -- WebScan : Press Release NEC to Supply W-CDMA Equipment for NTT DoCoMo's Next Generation Mobile Communications System 4/28/99 - NEC Corporation (NEC) (NASDAQ: NIPNY) announced today that it has been chosen by NTT Mobile Communications Network, Inc (NTT DoCoMo) to supply W-CDMA (wideband-code division multiple access) equipment for NTT DoCoMo's commercial mobile network. NEC will provide whole network system such as base transceiver stations, radio network controller, multimedia processing equipment, and mobile handsets for the world's first third generation mobile network which is scheduled to be operational in 2001. NEC has been involved in the development of W-CDMA for NTT DoCoMo in Japan. NEC has always been ahead of the development work and is actively involved in W-CDMA area by pursuing technical verification for radio interface and participating in the standardization activities. In March 1998, NEC established Telecom MODUS Limited and also established NEC Mobile Communications Development Singapore Pte Ltd. in July 1998 for the development of the systems. In March this year, NEC formed a strategic alliance with Siemens AG for the Third Generation Mobile Telecommunications System to combine their technology strengths and know-how in this field. NEC and NTT DoCoMo is also working together in technical trials of "W-CDMA" system with Telephone Organization of Thailand (TOT) which will start from November 1999. Also, NEC's trial version of the system has already been installed for British Telecom. As for the handsets, NEC's development division in Japan and NEC Australia Pty Ltd. are involved in the development. NEC believes it was these experiences and strong involvement in this next generation mobile communications area to NEC to be selected as a commercial systems supplier of NTT DoCoMo. The global development bases, vast experience and expertise in the mobile communications field of NEC, will result in the timely introduction of W-CDMA systems that offer sophisticated features delivering performance and reliability in a cost-effective manner and allow NEC to become a major world supplier of next-generation mobile communications systems.
