I would argue that peer pressure can be wholesome for adaptation. The line between social adaption and personal adaption is tough to draw- and personal success and growth may depend on social adaption.

Adaption doesn't mean everyone succeeds- it is necessary that many fail. The whole point is that those most fit succeed. So perhaps peer pressure weeds out the weak and unfit.
