Easy- in a violent and unstable society it is easy to foresee how YOU may be the next victim- if you have any imagination. It's the old "they came for the Jews, and I did nothing, they came for the Catholics and I did nothing..." thing. It is self interest.

I was just thinking about that in the car today.

I was thinking why am I kind? Because it is easy and pleasant AND because I know if I am ever at the mercy of someone I hope it is someone I have been kind to. Better never to be at the mercy of anyone, how I hate that, but it happens all the time and you never know when, and worst come to worst, let it be someone who knows I am kind myself- that society OWES me. It is a type of insurance- more than it is a debtor and creditor system- because it is not fair. You can't expect exact recompense. But you can find things come back to you- and that's enough for me.

And it works. I've occasionally needed something and found that the clerk I was dealing with, or the salesperson, or the school administrator, or whoever- KNEW me, and bent over backwards to help me, because they knew of something "good"- ie socially beneficial, that I had done. Cha ching.

According to Harry W. Mazal, the exact text of what Martin Niem”ller said, and
which appears in the Congressional Record, 14, October 1968, page 31636, is:

When Hitler attacked the Jews I was not a Jew,
therefore I was not concerned. And when Hitler
attacked the Catholics, I was not a Catholic, and
therefore, I was not concerned. And when Hitler
attacked the unions and the industrialists, I was not
a member of the unions and I was not concerned. Then
Hitler attacked me and the Protestant church ? and
there was nobody left to be concerned.
