There will always be trade offs between long term and short term success. For example- the corporate officer who pollutes the environment, may kill his own progeny down the road- perhaps they get cancer from whatever he is polluting the environment with.

There will always be a conflict between what is expedient and what makes sense for the long haul. Polluting makes sense in the short term- but it does NOT make long term sense- unless you and your progeny intend to leave the planet. It is irrational. I agree that people are irrational. I agree that they often are shortsighted. That being a given I think it shows that morally is NOT internal at all. That people need to cast about for it. If they are rational at the VERY least they won't go about fouling their nest. So I prefer rationality to the irrational.
