Yes, your list needs only thin films (all types), etch, implant, CMP, furnaces, cleaning and analytical, and it'd be almost complete. <smile> I'll grant you that ASML can supply the litho equipment for the toughest chips.

It's not a complete wash, of course. But it's hard for a European company to consider going head-to-head with AMAT or KLAC, to name but two. While some countries might be willing to support the in-country development of production tool infrastructure (Germany comes to mind, given all that is happening in Dresden), it's a long-term process. Once the current suppliers get wind of that effort, they'll seek to aggressively sew up the market ahead of the new tools' release.

One source for learning about companies attempting to get a piece of the European (or for that matter, Asian) market is the SEMI site (semi.org). Over 5,000 member firms, so lots of small and mid-size firms playing....
