Iridium gets an "offer" filed in NY Bankruptcy court on behalf of a Joseph Hirst of 4 Royal Arcade, London

ecf.nysb.uscourts.gov

250K$ offered for a 40 day option to purchase the constellation for 75M$.

Not clear that this is a "qualified" offer...but it had enough standing to make the courts docket sheet, notwithstanding the offer is two paragraphs long. Mr. Hirst purports to represent the "constellation 2000 group" [sic]

hmmmmmm....it's too late for April Fools jokes, right?

They could even get into trouble for crimes against humanity if they don't! That would be tantamount to removing the means of survival.

Right! They should flip the switches in certain areas as a public service. In others, they could threaten to empower the citizenry with communication services unless certain demands (open markets, free elections, etc) are met. That oughta strike fear into the heart on any self-respecting dictator.

Perhaps G* could get advertising revenue to help subsidize the cost. For a fee, Raytheon for instance, could carpet-message those in oppressed areas regarding a fire sale on Patriot missiles. Or, Instant Messages could be fired-off to selected citizens regarding the "truth" of a given policy or event. WHAT a propaganda tool!

One concern though, and I've mentioned this before, is that a CDMA GPS-enabled phone combined with a tyrannical government armed with ball-point-pen-sized "smart" bombs could lead to a scenario where one minute you're standing on a street corner waiting for your "subversive" friend to finish up a phone call, and the next minute you're looking for signs of life in a smoking crater where he once stood. There's just GOT to be a way to disable that GPS thingy, with G* that seems unlikely.
