MTIC--KEY to the PUZZLE

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 2, 2000-- MTI Technology Corp. (Nasdaq:MTIC - news) today announced that its Vivant high-performance, enterprise-class storage solutions are now supported on the Linux operating system.

By offering Linux support on the Vivant storage servers, MTI is not only expanding on its current cross-platform support capabilities, but is also offering the Linux community a fault-tolerant storage solution for those deploying Linux in large mission-critical environments.

One of the few high-end Linux storage solutions on the market today, Vivant is designed to support the demanding data storage requirements of large corporate enterprises and those involved in data-intensive, e-commerce operations. The systems deliver industry-leading throughput and reliability, along with multi-terabyte capacity.

MTI's Vivant product line for Linux will debut at the upcoming LinuxWorld Conference & Expo in New York City, Feb. 2 to 4, at the Caldera Systems Booth, No. 441.

According to market research firm International Data Corp. (IDC), Linux commercial shipments will grow faster than the total shipments of all other client or server operating systems through 2003. IDC research also states that Linux was the fastest-growing server operating environment in 1998, growing more than 212 percent in that year alone and capturing more than 17 percent of all server operating system shipments. Today, Linux boasts more than 1 million users worldwide.

Adding Linux support to the Vivant storage platform is the latest product offering based on the relationship between MTI and Caldera Systems, a premier provider of the Linux operating system for business.

MTI holds an equity interest in Caldera, and the two companies previously collaborated in bringing Linux support to MTI's Gladiator series of enterprise RAID solutions. MTI's Vivant storage servers now support the major releases of Linux, including Caldera and Red Hat.

``Linux has rapidly emerged as a key strategic operating system for many of our customers, particularly among Internet-related businesses,' said Kevin J. Liebl, vice president of marketing at MTI.

``The combination of MTI's Vivant platform and Caldera's OpenLinux sets the new standard for delivering Linux applications to customers demanding high availability, scalable high-performance data servers and solutions when addressing the need for both SAN and NAS connectivity.'

Vivant is the foundation of the recently announced MTI DataServices(TM) strategy. The product line provides strategically integrated storage hardware and software to minimize challenges often encountered in today's complex enterprise storage environments.

MTI's DataServices includes seven essential storage management features that are designed to provide the necessary functionality for enterprise storage networks, including certified and tested combinations of hardware and software, coupled with a wide array of service and support options.

These Integrated services include: Block Services (storing data in native OS formats for SAN environments), File Services (storing data at a logical file level for access by NFS and CIFS clients in a NAS environment), Connection Services (Fibre Channel and Ethernet networking), Replication Services (local and remote), Backup Services (backup and restore), Management Services (centralized storage management) and Support Services (24x7 support and professional services).

The Fibre Channel-based enterprise storage systems in the Vivant family features MTI's fault-tolerant, scalable technology that enables users to expand storage to multiple terabytes of data. The systems offer concurrent host support for a variety of applications that require high bandwidth and maximum transfer rates, such as large enterprise data warehousing, data mining and online transaction processing (OLTP) environments.

To ensure high levels of data integrity and availability in a cross-platform environment, the Vivant series can be configured with MTI's DataShield volume mapping. DataShield partitions large storage arrays into smaller logical units that may be assigned to separate servers on a Fibre Channel-based SAN. This enables storage to be consolidated into a single, easy-to-manage logical storage space that can be assigned to servers on an as-needed basis.
