Doug I don't know where you live - but in Canada you can go to a bank - the Bank of Nova Scotia is the leading bullion bank - and buy physical gold or gold coins. If you want you can receive a certificate instead of taking a gold bar. You can exchange the certificate for gold at any time (admmittedly only during office hours). It's a convenience.
Simple??

I'm not talking about the esoteric forms of 'paper gold' which exist. That's another story.
