Sarkie,
A friend pointed out that often when a stock gaps up, even when the body of the candle is white (meaning that the stock closed higher than it opened), you'll see a tail below the bottom of the candle body. That shows the retracement of the gap from the previous close to the opening price for the day of that stock.

It's easier to see on an intraday chart.
