(2303.TW) on Friday denied local media reports that operations at its new Fab. 5 plant will be halted because it hasn't been given full Environmental Protection Agency approval. "We believe we're in compliance and will cooperate with the EPA to clarify the situation," an official at Taiwan's number two chipmaker said. "We believe it will be resolved quickly and it shouldn't have a significant impact on our plans." The plant, which plans to boost production to 20,000 wafers per month around midyear, is currently testing equipment but not shipping to customers. The official wouldn't comment on a report that it would lose production of 120,000 wafers this year due to its dispute with the agency. The report quoted a UMC official as saying a government administrative error was behind the problem. Analysts said they expect the issue to be resolved quickly as a prolonged halt in the plant's operations would have a big impact on UMC and its customers. "I believe the government will help facilitate (the processing of) the documentation without disrupting production," said Liu Chitung, a technology analyst at Warburg Dillon Read in Taipei. Still, UMC's stock took a hit following the media reports. At 0303 GMT (11:03 p.m. EDT Thursday) the company's stock was down NT$3.00 (US$1=NT$30.525) to NT$98.00 on volume of 37.3 million shares.
