I think motivation IS important to barbarity- but that doesn't mean barbarity can't be successful. I happen to hope it isn't ultimately successful- but I certainly can't prove it won't be. However, from my observations I note that fanaticism and desperation certainly help barbarity along. For example I can imagine MYSELF being barbarous under the right circumstances.

I think it possible that barbarity is activity emanating from close to the reptilian core of our brains- and SOMEHOW barbarous civilizations manage to plug into the pure survival mechanism (where we will do ANYTHING to survive) and focus that outward for conquest. They (in other words) bypass the reasonable part of our brains, the more evolved part of our brains, that make us what we think of as "humane".

It's just a thought.
