CHELMSFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 2000--

Global NAPs to use Sycamore equipment to reduce costs and
accelerate time-to-market of new wave services
Sycamore Networks (NASDAQ: SCMR), a leader in intelligent optical networking, today announced that Global NAPs, a national competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC), will deploy Sycamore Networks' SN 8000 network nodes and SILVX(TM) optical network management system to further scale its Internet backbone bandwidth services. Global NAPs currently offers T1 through OC-3 services to customers from New England to Florida with plans to expand its services to California, Washington, Georgia, Nevada and Illinois by the end of 2000.

"Sycamore's equipment will allow us to move quickly from deployment to revenue and in the process, dramatically reduce our operational costs," said Frank Gangi, president of Global NAPs. "It will allow us to provide new high-speed wave-based services to a broad range of customers and make managing those services seamless within our entire network."

Sycamore Networks' SN 8000 provides the industry's most versatile optical networking transport platform. Due to its software-centric design, the SN 8000 can be deployed in metro core, regional and long-haul networks providing service providers with significant economic and efficiency benefits.

"In today's marketplace, service providers need products that enhance their competitive advantage," said Desh Deshpande, chairman and co-founder of Sycamore Networks. "Global NAPs understands the need to be first to market with state-of-the-art technology and has chosen Sycamore to provide that time-to-market advantage."

Privately held Global NAPs currently handles dial-up calls for Internet service providers such as Mindspring, MSN, Netcom, Prodigy, WebTV and Ziplink. It also serves Internet-bound calls for other local carriers such as GTE. In addition to its significant role in Massachusetts Internet access, Global NAPs also handles large volumes of Net traffic in New Hampshire, Rhode Island, the mid-Atlantic states and Florida. By leasing interstate fiber optics, Global NAPs plans to offer customers services in which all calls -- local and long distance -- will be billed at the same rate as local calls.
