Dear Rude: I just checked ML's latest research report (4-7-00) on DELL and the $100M vs. $400M comment does not jive with the information in their research report, either. ML gives DELL a figure of $272M for '99:

1998 1999 2000 2001E 2002E
Research & Development 203 272 374 520 627

Your comments on R&D are very well taken. "R&D" can be a real catch-all. As (or more) important as the amount spent is identification of exactly what the money was spent to do. Even the costs doing an employee efficiency study or customer satisfaction/demographic study can be squirreled away under R&D.

Best regards,

Lynn, about to go outside and enjoy the first sun we have had in a week!
