Dictionary.com says fundamentalism is:

A movement or point of view characterized by rigid adherence to fundamental or basic principles.

The fundamentalist accepts a pre-existing dogma as a matter of faith, without questioning it or tolerating its questioning by others. The fundamentalist also usually believes in the exclusive rectitude of this dogma.

I find fundamentalism dangerous because it requires unquestioning obedience to a doctrine, which usually translates into unquestioning obedience to the humans who promote this doctrine. Unquestioning obedience is always dangerous.

Any belief system based on personal inquiry and individually developed belief cannot be fundamentalist. I am not a fundamentalist; I came up with my beliefs on my own, and I question them continuously. If some idiot started following me around, believing everything I said, writing it all down, and demanding that others also believe it, that person would be a fundamentalist, but I wouldn't tolerate that for a second.

If someone chooses to disagree with me, fine. If someone chooses to discuss those disagreements, we will present our theories and the logic behind them (well, some of us will; others will announce grandly that their opinions are truth) and see which theory, if any, stands up to examination.
