U.S. Trade Commission Probes Japan's Hitachi, Sega

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Thursday it was investigating
whether computer chips used in video game consoles and other electronic products sold by two Japanese companies have
infringed on patents held by California-based Rambus Inc.(NasdaqNM:RMBS - news)

Rambus, which develops designs to speed up computer memory chips, has asked the ITC to block shipments of memory
chips sold in the United States by Hitachi Ltd. (6501.T) and Sega Enterprises Ltd. (7964.T), that it alleges infringe on
Rambus patents.

In a statement, the ITC said its investigation would focus on imports of so-called
synchronous dynamic random access memory devices (SDRAMs) and microprocessor
chips that are used in computers and other electronic products, including some video game
consoles.

The companies targeted include Hitachi Ltd. of Tokyo and Hitachi Semiconductor Inc. of
San Jose, California, as well as Sega Enterprises Ltd. of Tokyo and San Francisco-based Sega of America Inc.

``By instituting this investigation, the ITC has not yet made any decision on the merits of the case,' the commission's
statement said. ``The ITC will make a final determination in the investigation at the earliest practicable time.'

Officials from the Japanese companies were not immediately available to comment on the investigation.
