Are Napster and Gnutella unstoppable?

I think it will be the content providers and the consumer that ultimately decide the fate of proprietary CODEC's and the acceptance of copyright security measures. SanDisk has positioned itself to benefit from any decision which may be made. Here is yet another opinion.

"...and then there's the simple ethical issue: Most of us want the artists to be paid for their efforts; we just think paying $15 for a CD containing one song we want is excessive. Like all technology, the Internet music revolution will have consequences that are difficult or impossible to foresee today. Here's my prediction, however. We are now in a painful period of transformation that will change soon. Music will be freely available on the Internet or available at a very low price. The upside is that many more people will buy much more music; at a quarter a hit, why not buy 40 songs instead of 10? In the end, the music business will be worth even more than it is today, and everyone, including the artist, will be wealthier as a result. But before this can happen, the music industry must stop defending its turf and focus instead on working with the inevitable. The music industry cannot beat the Napsters and Gnutellas of the world. Therefore, the sooner they get smart and join them, the sooner we can build and enjoy the music industry promised by the new millenium."
