Placer to close 3 gold mines
Toronto--Apr 19--Canada's Placer Dome on Wednesday said its Misima gold mine
in Papua New Guinea will likely cease operations in the fourth quarter, due to
depletion of ore reserves. Placer also said it would close the Golden Sunlight
gold mine in Montana and the Golden Sunlight gold mine in Australia in 2001 and
2002, respectively. Placer said it may process low-grade ore stockpiles at
Misima and Kidston depending on future gold prices. (Story .26029)

Trade accord expected to boost S African gold sales to China
Johannesburg--Apr 20--South African President Thabo Mbeki and his Chinese
counterpart Jiang Zenin are to sign a bilateral trade accord that could boost
South African gold sales to Beijing, increase trade through a merchant shipping
agreement, and also lead to an increase in car exports from South Africa. (Story

Canada Feb gold production down 4.95% from a year ago
Toronto--Apr 20--Canada's February 2000 total gold production fell 4.95%
from Februay 1999, and fell 1.05% from January 2000, Natural Resources Canada
said Friday. Canada's total primary silver production was down 7.36% in February
2000 to 102.820 million ounces from a month earlier, and rose 1.09% from
February 1999. (Story .2176)

I was looking at the XAU components, and Anglogold has
really dropped over the last two months, and looks
pretty reasonable at $US20 (down from $28 in mid-Feb)
