Most europeans have no problems with foreign inventions. The new policy of the European Union will not subsidize European companies more than it will subsidize American companies. I think the biggest beneficiary will be the american company named IBM.

USA does the same as what the European Union does. How much does Microsoft pay in license to use ANSI character sets? How much does Apple pay in license to use the PCI standard? How much does Dell pay IBM to use the ISA standard? Nothing.

As far as I remember it was also the American government who required Microsoft Windows NT to be POSIX compliant. What the European Union does now is exactly the same, the only reason why you don't like it is because MSFT will not get any licenses when open-source solutions are made.

Regarding your comments about Europe in general, it is true that things run differently over here. Both systems has good sides and bad sides, and we should not discuss that here. To be short, I think you are wrong about Europe.
