Thanks for your reply. I got the answer today from CompUsa customer service: I can plug my laptop power supply right into the wall. No sparks, no jumpers, it just 'knows' how to deal with 240 volts 50 Hz.

Still don't know if I can plug the phone wire from the computer into the wall. I think there is a 125vdc bias voltage here in the states, but whether that matters, and whether the Windows dialer will work there, I am in the dark.

Actually, it's a moot point this time around, as I didn't take the laptop to Italy. Next time I will for sure.
