I find it difficult to give a single reason why I believe that Excite@home can pull it off. And you probably won't be satisfied with my answer.

MSN is after AOL big time. All the RBOCs are after AOL. Sprint, MCI, T and the rest are after AOL. Yahoo is after AOL. I believe that Excite@home is the right combination at the right time with the synergies necessary to pull it off.

I believe that ATHM has the headstart in broadband and that many of AOL's users are growing up and looking for alternatives. I believe that ATHM's technology (including what we haven't seen that's in the back room) and T's money are enough to break the juggernaut.

AOLs biggest nightmare is still Microsoft and MSN. But unlike the software business, the internet is young and it's still wide open territory. Further, I believe that content ultimately will attract users and Excite is working well in that area (all things considered). Granted they are a distant #5 in page views, and Yahoo would have been a better combination, but Yahoo has it's own agenda as well.

ATHM has proven that they can attract subscribers. Excite can attract page views and advertising. The synergy is there, the management needs to get a handle on it. Fortunately this technology is still young.

I agree with you though that content is key!

You might find this link cnet.com to be interesting reading. It's called the AOLization of America.

Let me know what you think.
