J-phone adds its name to Japan's list of 3G contenders

19 April 2000
J-phone, the consortium of mobile units belonging to Japan Telecom, BT and Vodafone Airtouch, announced Wednesday that it has applied for a third generation mobile license in Japan.

Three licenses are set to be awarded by the Minister of Post and Telecoms according to a "beauty contest" method. Each license caters for 2 times 15MHz spectrum.

NTT DoCoMo is so far the only other applicant for a license. Companies have until the second week of May to submit applications. The licenses will be awarded in July.

According to a BT spokesman, the government will make the awards according to a variety of criteria including: use of spectrum; financial backing; extent of network roll-out and speed of rollout; and quality of service and reliability.

J-phone plans to launch 3G services in Tokyo, Tokai and Kansai by December 2001, with the other regions coming onboard by October 2002.

The 3G licenses will be awarded nationally, and a statement from J-phone said it will offer roaming services between the nine regions to offer nationwide services.

Last month Japan Telecom announced it had signed up Nokia, Ericsson and NEC to build its wideband-CDMA network.
