Taiwan's UMC: Minimal Revenue Impact From Plant Dispute
TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--United Microelectronics Corp. (2303.TW) said Friday a dispute over its new Fab. 5 plant would have minimal or no impact on revenue this year provided the issue is resolved quickly.
The statement follows local media reports that operations at the plant would be halted because UMC hadn't been given full approval by the Environmental Protection Agency.

However, Taiwan's number two chipmaker said it received approval from government agencies for the plant's construction and was never informed that it needed an environmental assessment.

UMC said it will comply with any order to not manufacture chips at the plant, which is now only in a pilot production stage. It is not set to ramp up output until midyear.

However, the company said if the dispute is protracted and results in financial losses, UMC and shareholders wouldn't rule out seeking reparations from the government.

News of possible lost production sent UMC's stock tumbling NT$4.00 to close at NT$97.00 on Friday.
