Found a series of short articles on 3G at globalsources.com

3G networks as early as 2002. In contrast,
Strategis said 3G services will not be rolled
out in the United States until 2004. Indeed,
3G systems could be operating in Japan as
early as next year.

and

W-CDMA standard will become so well
established that it will take business away
from cdma2000 in the United States.
