Samsung Electronics announced Thursday that it has developed 512-meg dynamic random access memory chip for the first time in the world, adding that it will begin marketing the super chips from the second half of this year.

It is expected to further strengthen the position of the Korean semiconductor giant in the global memory chip market.

Hwang Chang-Kyu, vice president for memory business division, said that Samsung will supply the 512-meg DRAM chips to large server manufacturers from the latter half of the year and will enter into mass production from 2001's second half.

He estimated the global market for the chips at US$20 million in 2001, noting that it would skyrocket to US$41.1 billion in the year 2004.

The super memory chip, which is suitable for high-end PCs, servers and workstations, will be priced at about US$500, according to company officials.
