Along the lines of your post, there was a fission bomb fellow I worked with at Princeton. Name: Ted Taylor. John McPhee wrote a book about him. Fission Explosive Devices (FED) were the tool of choice for every problem: Coast to coast subway; escape vehicle from Armageddon? How about a huge spaceeship with a shock absorber capable of withstanding blasts? Just blow your way to the Moon. Also toyed with atomic handgrenades as I recall. He was brilliant--Institute for Advanced Study, etc. But a hoot!!!u
