He already owns AU! I don't follow it but have noticed that it has been weak since the Geita purchase? I don't know if this is a mere co-incidence - but I'd have thought there might be some synergies there. I guess they were the high bid - though Ashanti might have favoured Au because it did not insist on operating control - which might not have been wise. I can't imagine Barrick, for example, going into that situation without the power to take charge. But there were a lot of nationalist sensibilities at play I would guess.
