John - you're right about the dour MSFT con call... and Radio Shack is a nit in the overall scheme of things, and even for CPQ.

My point was that no matter what is happening in the real world. Kemble and others see it as being somehow good for DELL. If people are buying at retail they must be idiots, along with the people selling to them, since everyone knows that direct is SO MUCH better... when the reality is that the direct model has been a dismal failure in the consumer market, and so far the advent of the ecommerce model has not changed that.

"Maybe it will change in the future" - but maybe it won't. There is certainly nothing in the results shown by DELL or other direct vendors in the last few years that shows any trend in that direction. About as likely as the notion that people will start buying groceries over the web in significant numbers - another non-starter IMO.
