Your DSL connection will be supplied by your ISP. In my case BellSouth is my ISP (internet service provider, as well as email, newsgroups, ftp, etc.). They installed the DSL high speed modem on a signal split off from my existing phone line. They also provide cheaper phone line based service with the usual 56K or lower modems you would supply (like Mindspring, AOL, etc. as your ISP). But, one of the best benefits besides the incredible speed of my DSL connection is that I get DSL and a phone modem based connection at no extra charge. This has several benefits: 1. I can use my laptop modem to connect from anywhere for the cost of either a long distance call, or just use a local access number for the city I'm in. 2. If the DSL goes out (very rare & only once for more than a 15 minutes) I have always been able to immediately use the dial up phone modem connection to reconnect at the lower speed, but nevertheless have a connection. It has saved me bucks at least once. Of course, if the phone goes out, you're dead altogether. But it's great to have 2 connects for the price of one. My service costs $60/month, but I run those 4 computers with 3 bandwidth hungry trading applications and do the discussion following thing too. I actually have used both at the same time. It's not common to get a free dialup access with a cable modem, if you're down, you're out, unless you use one of the free dialup ISP's. Another benefit to the high speed connection leaving your phone line free, is you can call your broker, or tech support, while still online. Very helpful for delayed confirmations, etc. without having to go "blind" while sorting it out. I've even executed trades while on the phone about a previous one, and I've seen the results of the broker straightening out my orders even before he tells me over the phone. So, do I sound like I love my DSL connection- you bet. And all those pics and mp3's come over the net so fast now too!
