You are saying that Intel succeeded because they built brand

The branding I was referring to was "Intel Inside" and to a lesser degree, Pentium, Xeon and Celeron. x86 architecture is lacking to say the least. Branding helped bring Intel's name to the front cover at a time when x86 architecture had begun to be imitated and CPQ didn't really care who the supplier was. Intel's success is and always has been based on 4 important factors: timing, branding, manufacturing, and a dash of luck.

You are saying that Intel succeeded because they built brand, not superior products.

Intel succeeded because they were on the cutting edge and everyone else were followers of their vision. Branding and "Intel Inside" only served to put an exclamation point on the end of that statement. Companies like Intel can afford to address secondary and tertiary concerns like branding because their execution is already flawless. Their dominance allows them to cross the T's and dot the I's. OTOH, ATHM needs no such distractions. I would hate to see them drop the ball again, because they lost track of their primary focus, in order to address branding.
