nihil, It looks like we both made a mistake on this one. Lorrie asked what "Nez Perce" meant, and you switched to the Nisqually. I made an error when I referred to pince nez instead of Nez Perce.
I seem to recall reading that the Nez Perce did, indeed, decorate their noses with shells but can't be sure. They probably had to go through the "picking of the nose" gesture to remove the shells when they wanted a little relief from what must have been a bit uncomfortable.

For some strange reason, the white Europeans liked to change the names of tribes even when there was no difficulty in pronunciation. For instance, they changed the name of the Muskogee to the Creeks. Who knows why. ~H!
