'fraid we go botanical emergency here in the hi desert, meph. don't know whether to notify the cdc or monsanto??

the sad tail all starts with the new hound-dog pound puppy -first dog i ever had that yodels. several trips to the vets, much attrition of the checkbook, 2 courses of antibiotics and we are finally informed, in gravest medical jargon, that hanna's discharge is a common complaint with prepubescent hound dog bitches - the dreaded 'puppy vaginitis'. that diagnosis was, however, only the beginning.

we are really into trying to get a no-maintainence landscape here, but have it be more than just the common cholla/yucca scrub. we do have several varieties of very nice trees, gambel oak, pinion pine, alligator and utah juniper, cottonwoods and arizona walnut, but i have to admit the tallest rarely get over 25'. so, we seek zeroscape plants that are unusual to the area. one great find was the iris; it loves horrible soil and lack of water, it thrives. in pursuit of this quest we hit wally world's nursery and picked up some phlox and myrtle to edge some stone walls i am erecting as i terrace the hill between the buildings. started off great! they seemed to love it here; had all the necessary characteristics for hi desert survival. we were enthralled with the addition of deep greeness crawling across the tops of river rocks. and then the tragedy struck. hanna took to sitting on the new plants; the hunters and hunted alike love hi ground positions - top of the wall was the perfect lookout. but the plants started to die off. we added more water, we talked to them, we sat up nocs with the dears. all to no avail. our painful conclusion is that our bedding plants now have puppy vaginitis!

any help from a seasoned gardener, meph? vinegaroons will have to wait for another day. (does mon look really, really awful, or am i just grieving still?) don
