I can't think why anyone would go to Excite I can't think of why people use AOL, but a cross-section of America actually do. I think the answer lies in the segmentation of the market. Most that use ATHM are savy. This is no doubt why a vanilla, albeit high quality vanilla portal is not the best fit. The majority of the available market which is still not connected is most definitely in a segment which is not savy. Things like my.excite have a better chance in this market. It's like trying to sell sand in the desert. This is done every day. Ever been to Hawaii? Lot's of money changes hands every day over small bottles of sand. It's all in the image the merchants have created for us: take the island home with you!
