Rationally we may not want to have that quality of life- but evolution doesn't think rationally, in fact (imo) it doesn't "think" at all- it just is. It's simply an outcome.

I never said we had to save everything to survive as a species- but almost all of us WANT to survive. We want to survive so much that we hang on in the most precarious situations. No one wants to volunteer to be the civilization that doesn't survive (or at least no civilization I can think of).

When the human population was drastically reduced- that probably limited us- what genetic possibilities were lost with that brush with extinction?

And you have it backwards- we help MANKIND because it is best for our children, not the other way around. Everything we do for society we do to strengthen the societal "boat" that holds us and our children. It's a fragile boat, it needs a lot of work. I am sure there ARE people who would kill us all- but that's not a very adaptive strategy- so I don't think there are a LOT of people like that. Of course it doesn't mean one couldn't- there is always that possibility- so enjoy yourself. I enjoy myself. I have lots of fun. I am happy today. I plan for the future- but not at the expense of the present. That's all you can do, I think.
