Hi Mike, funny thing is, that article about the hybrid Hitachi Itanium based system in question here didn't even mention what operating system they intended to run on it. I guarantee it won't be mainframe OS (MVS). So, what will its RAS ratings be?

eetimes.com

Anyway, some of the clustered Intel based systems can have RAS numbers that are way up there, and they're way cheaper than equivalent power mainframes or Suns.

Re: your statements about system reliability of x86 vs non-x86 servers?...

Hi Mike,

I tried very hard to make it clear that I was referring to currently held prejudices (which may still be correct, but I was only talking about opinions).

What is may basis for claiming such opinions exist? Personal experience with IT professionals across a wide spectrum of business and government installations. And you might also consider the volume of sales and rate of increase of those sales of SUN (as an example) then contrast that with the currently lousy price/performance of SUN hardware when compared with X86 hardware. Obviously, data center people think that there is more to performance than SPEC numbers and many (not all) also think that Intel Inside doesn't cut it (at least, when packaged with the currently available operating systems and support). This is changing, but if Intel keeps embarrassing itself with things like the 820/840 recalls, the trend towards acceptance of Intel for middle and upper range systems could reverse.

Regards,

Dan
