You know what is really amazing about the thinkers of the past? Some of them were exactly like us- or at least some of them seem exactly like ME. A few times in my life I have read things (of course they WERE translated, and I always try to figure if I agree with the translations but my Latin is not as good as I could wish and my greek is non-existent) by "ancients" and come face to face (so to speak) with thoughts that could be MY thoughts. It is very wonderful. It doesn't happen often- and so far mostly with the Greeks. And of course since I am woman most of them wouldn't have thought much of me (so perhaps it's best for me they are dead- and I'm appreciating them at historical distance)- but I can certainly appreciate their thoughts. And they aren't any different. They aren't exposed to what WE are exposed to- but they saw things we will never see. And yet we process things (or at least some of us do) the same- despite the distance of time and place, despite the fact that the thinkers I read were male and I am female- yet some IDEAS we share are identical. I don't know about you- but I found that thrilling.

Of course they were living at the height of their civilization as we are. Perhaps luxury and comfort breeds a similar type of thought?

Actually- it's just like reading you. When I read what you've written I think "Hey, get out of my brain". And yet I am female and you are male. We live in very different places. I suspect we live very different lives. Yet we think alike. Interesting isn't it?

Again, you misunderstand. I was not adducing arguments, or why would I have included the Code of Hammurabi and the aphorisms from the Eddas. I was showing "snapshots" of various peoples talking about morality, to show what I based my generalization on......
