Natural gas plants, whether they be simple turbines or combined cycle plants have an
operating cost that is at least 2 - 3 times the operating cost of coal units -- that relationship
is not likely to change for the better (i.e. to favor natural gas generation).

Is this due to the difference in cost of the respective fuels and the efficiency of the fuel itself?

Electrical energy is no small input to the overall economy. As a result of the current
environmental approach -- i.e. a punitive one instead of looking for the best way to make use
of a resource that the US has plenty of -- utilities are afraid to construct coal plants. We
currently get something like 50% of our electrical needs from that "dirty" fuel.

Do you recall a firm in the Pittsburgh are called Noxo and I believe the ticker was NOXO prior to its bankruptcy? They had some government funding and also some funding from Alcoa if I recall correctly. The idea was a little more than a coal scrubber. It was a chemical reaction that would produce liquid nitrogen and sulfuric acid for commercial use if I recall correctly. It has been sometime. I owned shares as a speculative play but of course it failed.

No! There are far better solutions as you mentioned. I agree with that. I was unaware that the fuel pricing was that much different at this point in time although am well aware of our vast resources of coal.

Electricity generated by coal isn't going away. What Gore and his ilk would like to do -- at least
this is all I can figure -- is add taxes to all the emissions of coal and raise the price to the
extent that gas becomes favored regardless of economics.

Is there not an escalting law that give "credits" for the use of "clean" fuel that may be sold to other utilities to offset their fees for the use of "dirty" fuels? That was the market which Noxo was trying to address.

don't think Gore and his buddies have a clue. I wonder if you asked him: How much of the US'
electrical energy comes from coal? What his answer would be. I wonder if he has a clue about
the cost to produce that amount of electricity every year and what it would cost to produce
from other means. I mean, I know he invented the internet and he is a pretty smart guy and
all ...

Yes he is truly brilliant with a terrifc understanding of technolgy in general in all areas;-)

Seriously, there's a lot of money at stake here and not all scientists are agreed that CO2
<causes> global warming. All we have is a correlation ... there are some longer term historical
records from which one may infer that the correlation may be a fluke ...

The CO2 emmisions would not be any different between natural gas and coal would they production being equal? SO2 and Nitric Oxide (NO2?) would be the main problems to address?

I was unaware that residential airconditioning was was so common as you said. I am not doubting it at all. Just in my neck of the woods residential airconditioning is not all that common. We have it now starting about three years ago but the delay there was due to the fact when this house was built, there was a moratorium on natural gas to electric heat was intitally installed. We had no duct work. Some recently developed flexible ducting material made the job much easier and took less living space away.
