You are right. There is something very odd and incongrous about the statements of MSFT and those of INTC, AMD and the box makers.

The only thing I can think of on a practical level is that W2000 doens't seem to me to be anything like as easy to install as an upgrade as previous MSFT Windows versions. I bought it and started to read the installation instructions but I tell you I got scared and I'm a techie.

You need all sorts of drivers from your preipheral makers and some are simply not available. I don't know if anyone herre has tried to do the upgrade from 98 and I'd love to hear if they were successful and if they found it as daunting as I did.

I actually began to ask mysekf hwat on earth was MSFT up to putting out something as complicated as this. I wonder if this isn't the problem and that fans of MSFT as I am just haven't gone out to buy the upgrades of 2000. Just a guess.

Still the differences between the processor and box makers on the one hand and MSFT on the other don't add up since there must be some operating system in the boxes and surely Linux isn't material yet.

Best regards,

L
