How important is pincount?

Lower pincounts translate to lower chip packaging costs, and lower board costs. In a system like PS2 (which requires multiple ports to DRAM), the the cost savings can be substantial. Of course, these costs have to be balanced against the cost of the memory itself, which does not tip favorably toward DRDRAM at the present time. (Not to say that that won't change over time.)

In a single ported system, any cost savings due to pin count are negligable compared to the higher costs currently associated with DRDRAM.
