I don't know either - except that I've read that the father had more to do with his upbringing (or at least as much) as the mother. Also the act of taking to the open seas with the child (presumably without dad's consent) was in itself the original act of kidnapping. The war of images is fascinating - one has to ask how the photographer was in exactly the right place and who decided to have Elian taken to the closet by one of the fishermen who rescued him. Rehearsed in advance I suspect since the relatives knew a raid was coming. Still the image of the happy father and child is gradually sinking in.
