Broadcom Inc. (NasdaqNM:BRCM - news), the largest maker of semiconductors used for Internet access via cable-TV lines, topped Barron's list, which graded the 500 largest companies in terms of market capitalisation. Barron's reviewed the corporations based on stock-market performance, top-line revenue growth, a metric labeled CFROI that measures real cash returns on the capital invested in a company, stripped of the effects of inflation and accounting practices, and forecast CFROI for this year. The article estimated that Broadcom's chips are now in more than 80 percent of cable modems, digital cable TV set-top boxes and local area network switches sold around the world, ``making the company one of the key beneficiaries in the continuing seismic shift in communications technology.' PMC-Sierra (NasdaqNM:PMCS - news), another communications chip maker, won second place on Barron's list, followed by software companies Oracle Corp.
