Yes, I can understand how those helped. As I have mentioned before, by the time I was out of college, I had become pretty much a New Republic- type neo-liberal, concerned about attacks on Western values, over- confidence in social programs, our position vis- a- vis the Soviets, and the affirmation of capitalism as the best model of economic development. Things that affected me: seeing Allard Lowenstein, who promoted the candidacy of Eugene McCarthy and George McGovern, on Firing Line describing how supposed friends turned on him, and accused him of fascism, for supporting a moderate settlement in Zimbabwe- Rhodesia, to preclude anarchy or a Communist take over; having Jimmy Carter, supposedly a "moderate", have to change his mind on Soviet aggression after Afghanistan; watching Free to Choose on PBS, and "getting" some of the reasons that government regulation goes awry better....Of course, there were many other things, including watching Herblock on the Tom Snyder show admit that he would prefer Reagan to Carter, although he was voting for Anderson; seeing an interview with Reagan where it was clear he was an intelligent, well- balanced individual; and seeing a column in the Washington Post trashing Solzhenitsyn after his famous Harvard address....Anyway, I was a neo- liberal when I went in the voting booth, and poof, by virtue of voting for Reagan, I became a neo- conservative. Of course, I was really a moderate, and retained my registration as a Democrat for several years. The transition to real conservatism came with the years.......

Of course, he lied. Does that matter to you at all?
