Of course a horse deserves better treatment than a marine. A horse never volunteered for anything. He was caught and broken to be a slave to someone else's will. A Marine is a volunteer, who agrees with his officers to be turned into the world's best fighting man. It is an irrational task. No one interested in his comfort of convenience would ever become a marine. You seem to think that it is a favor to let some one fall out, and be labeled a coward and weakling. In war the straglers are captured or tortured and killed. In the marines you learn to be a man, the toughest of the tough and the bravest of the brave. If you can't take it you get discharged and might be welcomed into the army. The cowards never start, and the weak ones die on the way. I'll admit that's a lousy way to run a kindergarten. We are trying to educate citizens to be learned and gentle. kind to children and animals. But after all, in the marines one has to be dehumanized and turned into a killing robot. Governments (as Thoreau knew) can do this trick. He saw the marines pull a single black man out of court and turn him over to his slave master. Not a man in that company shot his officer. They were marines who broke into John Brown's redoubt and shot and wounded him. They were marines who stormed ashore at Iwo and who defended Fox Hill against the Chinese in Korea. People don't do those things. Ranting, untrained, raving patriots don't do those things. Marines do. And the only reason you can shoot your mouth off, is because of Marines and other fighting men have been willing to die for your rights.
