Shocker from Elian Negotiator: 'The Raid Didn't Have
to Happen'

Aaron Podhurst is arguably the most respected, above-board attorney in
the State of Florida. That's why he was asked to serve as "central
mediator" in the attempt to bring about a peaceful resolution of the
Elian stand-off.

In a statement from Podhurst obtained by NewsMax.com early Sunday, the
Miami "super lawyer" raises serious questions about whether the brutal
pre-dawn Holy Saturday raid was truly necessary:

"I can attest to the fact that the Miami relatives did negotiate in good
faith throughout Thursday and Friday and into the early morning hours of
Saturday. I also believed the Attorney General was acting in good faith.

"Although the Attorney General advised me at some time around 4:00am
that she could not negotiate any further; productive negotiations and
conversations were ongoing right up to the moment of the raid. I believe
an agreement for a peaceful and voluntary transfer of the custody of
Elian Gonzalez was possible, when the raid was launched."

Podhurst's statement flies in the face of Reno's assertions that the
Miami relatives "kept moving the goalposts." Podhurst is stating that
the deal was possible, which is exactly why Reno torpedoed it.

Marisleysis Gonzalez told reporters on Saturday that the family was
still on the phone with Justice Department negotiators when gun-waving
federal agents broke down their door and abducted the six-year-old.

Jack Thompson, NewsMax.com's "Man in Miami," filed this report.
