Joan,

The poor kid lived through shark infested waters. Signed an application for asylum. I think he should be able to do that seeing as how the government stretched it out. I get real bad feelings when a gun is inches from a child's face and the gunslingers say no warrant is needed. Also given our current administration's record I have a feeling it's a bull shit.

Bill

Thank you, Joan, for your posting. The more I watch the goings on, the more appalled I am: The welfare of a child and the normal considerations about his welfare have been swept away by posturing about "slavery" and "freedom" in the service of politics.

CB and X can speak far more knowledgeably than I about the law and I find their postings of interest on the law. I can only say that I am disgusted by the use and misuse of the law to further political agendas (including those of the "Miami connection") without real concern for the emotional well-being of a particular six-year-old child. Less public posturing and a good deal more discovery in private is in order if there can be a really honest attempt at a determination as to what to do. I have little faith that this will happen.

It is certainly possible that the charge of abuse is hooey, although I am not sure why anyone would be certain. It is possible that the claim that Elian's custodial parent was the father is hooey too, and the absence of documentation is suspicious, if not conclusive. The questions are, has justice been served without a proper airing of the issues in court? and was it necessary to make a huge demonstration of force when an acceptable third- party guardian might have been found? After all, the court hearings are likely to be expedited anyway.......
