David: "The fact remains reclaiming the child could have been achieved by simpler and better means. You cannot tell me that 10 federal officers at the door would not have claimed the child with little or no resistance. These people were not gun freaks..."

What do you think was being attempted by Reno during this period? Simpler and better means? Well, what were those simpler means? You do realize that Miami is one of those stupid cities that allows its citizens to carry firearms, don't you? How was the INF to know who had a gun or not? In addition, the reunification operation lasted 3 minutes. Did you notice how many neighbors and friends were on the scene immediately? The resistance was obviously "organized." The INF did the right thing to go in when it did, quickly, forcefully and without incident! If they did anything differently, the INF officers would have been surrounded by a hostile crowd and someone would have gotten hurt.

But, why do you overlook the fact that the "15 minute of fame" relatives could and should have turned-over Elian a long-time ago? If they had, there wouldn't have been an incident. That, my friend, was the "simpler and better means."

i agree, too bad the lazaros and their extremist Cuban exile "leaders" did everything possible to keep the boy away from his natural father. the feds moved too late.

>You cannot tell me that 10 federal officers at the door would not have claimed the child with little or no resistance. These people were not gun freaks with a compound.

Hey dude, you simply have no idea with what people we are dealing with here. I posted an article listing this community's violent history a few days ago. These are not reasonable people, they are not only gun freaks but bomb freaks too! Again, I would like to post here that I believe most Cubans here are moderate and hard working citizens who care about this country and Cuba so I hope they rise up and throw these rascals out to the trash where they belong!

>The fact that the feds could take action and did is beside the point. It is a point of personal liberties and the goverments willingness to lower the boom with a vengeance.

No man, it is a point of enforcing our laws and preserving the father son bond.

>Legally they were right, but from a civil societal view, what was achieved?

The law was enforced, the father son bond was restored.

>We now see that you can storm homes and point guns at US
citizens! Thanks for the infomercial on what not to do in a free country just because you can.

This should serve as a lesson to anyone who keeps a little boy away from his father! Too bad they did not fire them in the process so we spare ourselves from looking any more at the Lazaro gang!

<< The fact remains reclaiming the child could have been achieved by simpler and better means. >>

True. Why did Reno go overboard and order a violent raid on a peaceful family, and terrorize a child who has suffered so much already?

They were having leaders of the community, including the President of the U. of Miami, involved in the plans for turning over Elian.

Instead, a picture, which will be seen as U.S. brutality, and which will be used for decades by U.S. enemies, has been circulated world wide. I love my country, but I am embarrassed by that picture, and the government abuse that it represents.

<< We now see that you can storm homes and point guns at US citizens! >>

Scary, isn't it? Many will not realize the precedent set, until it happens to them.
