INS Commissioner Reissner has said they had the necessary court order.

Let me ask you something hypothetically: if you were a divorced father who had lost custody of your son, and were asked by the relevant authorities to turn him over to another family member, how long do you think local officials in your state would "negotiate" with you over the terms of the child's handover?

I think we both know the answer: 2 seconds, if that! The federal government here did much more than it was required to do, and at some point has to take action against anyone who acts in open defiance of the law. That's all there is to it.

Frank, With all due respect, take your blinders off.

>>Regardless of whether the boy should be back with the father or not there is a right way to do things<<

The Attorney Generals Office asked many times to hand him over.

>>The father is a coward<<

The uncle and his family are show boaters who have taken advantage of the trust of a young boy.

>>He should have come to Miami or at least a neutral site to work for a reasonable solution<<

Yes, perhaps he should have hopped on a bus and come to Miami.

>>I believe the Miami family really loves the child and would have turned him over if they felt assured he would be treated properly and if it were ordered<<

They were ordered. They refused. In fact they dared the government to use force. Well, they got exactly what they wanted. Do you think that telling the US government that they could only get Elian by force was in his best interest? How dare you presume what his father is feeling inside. How dare the Cuban American community spew innuendo, hearsay and lies about this man in a desperate attempt to sway American opinion. You lose. The kid wins. BR

BTW...for the record, I am a middle Republican who is pissed off at my party for taking such a lame position in this whole mess. Nobody thinks Reno is a bigger goof than me....but this ended the RIGHT way.
