Frank,

Be realistic. They had to get in and out fast, before a huge crowd gathered. You know darn well that the crowd would have surrounded the agents and not allowed them to leave. Then a truly massive show of force would have been required to extract them, and people would have been hurt.

There is however one other alternative that could have been considered from early on. Elian's could have been transferred to a neutral party, pending resolution of the legal matters. This might have defused the situation. I bet the INS will be a lot more careful if this ever happens again.
