I think Reno was dealt a very bad hand by the Appeals Court. When they ruled that Elian had a right to be heard and should not leave the country, I wonder why didn't also order that custody be transferred to a neutral party? This is the only thing I can think of that might have defused the situation.

i believe your criticisms of Reno are misplaced. Under the circumstances, she had to enforce the law. Lazaro Gonzales no longer had legal custody. His failure to turn over the child as ordered is probably grounds for criminal or civil legal action. In my opinion he is guilty of reckless child endangerment for failing to comply with the order. He knowingly kept the child in a location where federal custody enforcement would likely result in mob resistance.

I am afraid the publicity from it will also hurt tourism from other countries.

You mean the Tour of Little Havana that includes a visit to Mariselysis room and the broken bed of our Little Hero Elian won't be making the top dollar for the Relatives that they have been figuring?
